The Ethical Effect

James 2:14–26

The ethical effect, faith without fruit, is the subject of James 2:14–26. The church needs a faith that works — a faith with accompanying fruit.

  • A faith without fruit is a false faith (vv.14–17). Merely claiming that we are Christians does not make us such. A faith with no works is a faith with no worth.
  • A faith without fruit is a futile faith (vv. 18–19). Works emerge from true faith. Christ transforms us and produces fruit through us.
  • A faith without fruit is a fatal faith (vv. 20–26). Faith without works has no vital signs, no pulse, no heartbeat. Such faith is dead.

Faith and fruit are as essential to each other as the body and the spirit.
