Noted experts share insights about retirement in today’s economy

May 17, 2011

DALLAS —Fluctuating markets, concerns about inflation, or simple questions about where the economy goes from here create confusion about when to retire or even about making plans for retirement.

To answer some common retirement-planning questions in today’s economy, GuideStone assembled a panel of distinguished experts who offer hope for those who are in retirement, those who are about to retire, and for those who are years away. The panel discussion can be viewed online.

“The process of retiring in the 21st Century has become as diverse as our culture,” said John R. Jones, chief operating officer of GuideStone. “With advances in technology and medicine, people are living longer, healthier and more active lives. Our goal at GuideStone is to prepare our participants for retirement as best we can, no matter what their definition of retirement might be.”

The panel, moderated by GuideStone President O.S. Hawkins, includes:

  • Dr. Ray Perryman, economist and President, The Perryman Group.
  • Jean Walshe, CFA, CAIA, Executive Director and Client Advisor, J.P. Morgan Asset Management.
  • J. Ray Nixon, Jr., Executive Director, Large Capital Value Equity Portfolio Manager, Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss.
  • Dallas Salisbury, President and Chief Executive Officer, Employee Benefit Research Institute.

The panelists offered their vantage points on retirement, including statistical information and actionable recommendations. The question and answer format included whether retirees can still have the retirement about which they may have dreamed, making sure investors are adequately prepared and potential changes in the retirement and economic landscape.
