DALLAS

Leaders of the various Southern Baptist Asian American organizations met virtually with GuideStone® leaders Thursday (October 8) for a time of conversation and fellowship.

The meeting — originally planned to be in person at GuideStone’s Dallas offices but moved online due to COVID-19 — is the second in several years.

“We appreciate the opportunity to serve all of our churches,” GuideStone President O.S. Hawkins said. “To have the opportunity to sit down with our Asian American leaders to learn about their unique needs and how we can better serve them, and for them to hear about the products and services we offer to churches, is a true blessing for all of us.”

The session began with greetings by Hawkins, Chief Operating Officer John R. Jones and Chief Insurance Officer Chu Soh, a native Korean who joined GuideStone’s Executive team earlier this year.

“We believe that we are here to support a healthy church — a healthy church that is free to transform the world,” Soh said. “We exist to guide the church on its journey to total well-being.”

Additionally, Soh noted GuideStone’s efforts to become a more diverse workplace.

“Joining GuideStone at a time like this in our organization’s 102-year history is a special honor,” he said. “This year we share publicly our efforts to become more focused on inclusion and diversity. Since 2005, we’ve grown our diverse population in our management ranks by more than 300%.”

Participants from the Asian American Collective heard from each ministry area at GuideStone and the services available to churches through retirement, investments, life and health plans, and church insurance.

“It’s important that we have these opportunities to share the GuideStone story with as many churches as we possibly can so that we can be even more effective in serving the churches of our convention,” said Hoon Im, who serves on the Customer Solutions team for GuideStone. “It’s a privilege to help share how GuideStone is committed to the local church and helping the church solve its benefit and insurance needs so that it can focus on the mission God has called them to.”

Participants expressed their thanks to GuideStone for the meeting and service the ministry provides to Asian American churches.

“We’re grateful for our partnership with Dr. O.S. Hawkins and the GuideStone Leadership team in providing potential services to our 2,095 Asian congregations,” said Peter Yanes, executive director for Asian American Mobilization with the SBC Executive Committee. “The Asian American Summit has provided important information about the products and services that our pastors and church leaders who are faithfully laboring for the gospel should look into.”
