Faith-based investing seeks to align financial decisions with biblical principles — pursuing competitive returns while remaining faithful to Scripture. As more investors seek to align their values with their investments, many turn to approaches such as socially responsible investing (SRI), which generally considers environmental impact, social responsibility and corporate governance factors alongside potential financial performance.
But faith-based investing is different. It’s rooted in unchanging biblical truth rather than shifting cultural standards. Through its faith-based investing strategies, GuideStone® is working toward a world transformed by Christian investing — helping believers steward God’s resources faithfully.
A key component of this approach is Christian Values Screening, a disciplined process for evaluating investments and avoiding companies whose products or services conflict with biblical convictions.
Our investment strategies do not invest in companies or organizations that offer products or services that are incompatible with our Christian values, including, but not limited to, those involving abortion, sexual immorality, alcohol, tobacco or gambling.*
Christian Values Screening is not a one-time review. It is a structured, ongoing process designed to support faithful stewardship across GuideStone’s investment strategies.
First, investable companies and organizations that provide products or services that conflict with the screening criteria are identified using a variety of innovative research tools. Once this data has been compiled, our proprietary Restricted Issuers List is developed.
Using this list as a guide, a faith-based investing mandate is created for all GuideStone investment products and services. Trades are monitored daily to ensure compliance with the Christian Values Screening requirements.
Extensive due diligence is also conducted on prospective sub-advisers to ensure they are willing and able to comply with the restrictions while still performing competitively for investors.
Our culture is constantly changing, and not always for the better. New products and services regularly enter the marketplace, reflecting these negative changes. Because of this, Christian Values Screening is a continual process, and screening criteria are regularly reviewed and revised as necessary to help ensure GuideStone investment strategies remain faithful to biblical principles as new investment opportunities are identified.
Oversight of this process is provided by the GuideStone Committee on Faith-Based Investing, which meets regularly to review and revise screening criteria and the restricted securities list. In addition, full-time analysts support daily monitoring of Christian Values Screening activity.
A world transformed by Christian investing begins with disciplined faith-based investing, supported by a thoughtful and consistent approach to Christian Values Screening, while still seeking attractive returns that are competitive with the broader market. GuideStone strategies are devoted to helping you faithfully steward the resources God has given you.
