In Death and Life: Mabel Addison’s Story

Mabel Addison always knew she would marry a minister.

Growing up on a farm in Missouri, she often told others just that. So, when a young preacher named Henry came to her rural church, she prayed, “Lord, I’d sure like to iron that man’s shirts.” By that summer, they were married.

Over the next 57 years, Mabel and Henry served churches throughout Missouri and Kansas. They raised three daughters, attended seminary and made a life centered on ministry. Most of their churches were small and rural. To supplement their income, they restored antique furniture and sewed drapes from home — never advertising and always trusting the Lord to provide.

In time, Henry’s health declined. Heart surgeries slowed him down, and eventually, he had to step away from the pulpit. When he passed, Mabel says the hardest part was learning how to be alone.

“But I’ve found there’s no better cure for loneliness than the Lord,” she says. “He’s a friend who cares at all times.”

Not long after Henry’s passing, a local pastor connected Mabel with Mission:Dignity®. The monthly financial support has helped her stay in her home, remain active in church and continue encouraging others in her community.

“The ministry isn’t easy,” Mabel says. “But it’s rewarding. And through it all, I’ve never felt alone. I praise him because I never, ever felt alone. And I still don’t.”
