Never Too Late to Learn

Betty still remembers 1978, the year she and her husband, Paul, left Taiwan with their two little girls to follow God’s call to plant a Mandarin-speaking mission church in Los Angeles.

For more than 40 years, ministry was their heartbeat. They opened their home, started English services for second-generation immigrants and even planted another house church when members moved away. From Los Angeles to Taiwan to Hawaii, they shared the Gospel wherever God led.

Along the way, Betty raised three children and welcomed eight grandchildren into her life. When her husband passed away, she could have stepped back. Instead, she stepped forward — counseling church members, leading prayer meetings and continuing to serve.

Now in her seventies, Betty lives on a limited income as a widow. She wondered how she would manage paying for car insurance, groceries and daily needs. That’s when Mission:Dignity® stepped in with monthly support that covers the essentials and allows her to stay active.

What makes Betty’s story remarkable is that she has become a student again. At the YMCA, she’s taking free ESL classes to improve her English — not for herself — but to better encourage others in faith.

“I’m still learning,” she says with joy. “I don’t worry. I trust Jesus. I have Jesus, and he is enough.”

She clings to Matthew 19:26 (CSB): With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
