Dr. Jim Henry remembers the exact moment he first chose to support Mission:Dignity®.
As president of the Southern Baptist Convention® (SBC), Jim took the stage at the 1994 SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, to introduce the next item on the agenda — a video presentation from Mission:Dignity.
“I was moved to tears,” recalls Jim. “I stood on stage watching that presentation, and I realized that these retirees are heroes of the faith who have limited income and little recognition.”
“The moment I got home, I prayed with my wife, Jeanette, and the two of us committed our support. I have been giving ever since.”
A pastor of more than 60 years, the former SBC president and GuideStone® trustee believes that the purpose of Mission:Dignity is rooted in a biblical calling.
“God has always had a great concern for his servants,” Jim continues. “So many of our Mission:Dignity recipients are widows, and the Bible makes special mention of caring for widows (James 1:27). It’s our responsibility to help make sure his people are cared for.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned through my time with Mission:Dignity, it’s that you can’t outgive God. He has been so faithful to me, and I feel that my giving has blessed me just as much as it has the widows and pastors we help support.”
When asked what he would say to someone considering a donation to Mission:Dignity, Jim’s answer was clear:
“If you have the resources, we need the help. When we all pitch in, we can make a big difference!”
